Wrong field order (MPEG-PS to XviD interlaced error)

Post by ChupoCro » Fri Jan 29, 2010 3:06 am

I have MPEG-PS interlaced source videos (DVB-T capture) that I'd like to encode into interlaced XviDs. The problem is the resulting videos have wrong field order. The source has Top Field First but the result always has Bottom Field First --> distorted video (comb effect). Is there a way to force the field order thru Extra Opions string or something? I see FFmpeg has the Force Field Order option but I need that option for XviD.

Interlaced xvid always shows artifacts when played on a computer. Interlacing is for MPEGs.

Does it mean it is not possible to change the field order to make it right? What is then the best way to compress captured DVB-T and preserve interlacing?

Thank you for answering me!

I am aware of that fact but I can also recognize wrong field order (much more distortion than when the field order is right). Besides, MediaInfo says:
source:
Scan type : Interlaced
Scan order : Top Field First
destination:
Scan type : Interlaced
Scan order : Bottom Field First

My guess is that ladycoder is implying that Xvid files should be progressive, not interlaced.
All my Xvid/AVI files are Progressive, MediaInfo giving no interalcing comments.

I'm curious as to how you got MeciaCoder to give interlace Xvid?

There's a boolean variable Interlaced Video Content in Settings > Video Encoders > Xvid:

Here's where I got an idea: http://tinyurl.com/ydn28nr. Unfortunately mentioned Force Field Order trick didn't work. I've also read this:
XviD supports interlaced material - though you'll have to disable B-frames or some other feature to get it working (you must encode with the Enable Interlacing option).
at some forum so I was looking for the option.

Since it is giving you trouble why not do the conversion in progressive and see how your application/device responds?
