Some encoders not working

Some encoders not working
I have experienced some of the encoders not working.
Goal convert mp3 -> AAC for ipod.
I try and use the itunes codec but it errors out on all files. Open up console and there are no error messages.
Source: Mplayer
Encoder: ItunesEncode
Resample: Orig
Gain: 0
Down mix: disable
auto: uncheck
audio id: 0
language: blank
It "processes" each file but there is not any output.
If I use the codec it works but I was having problems playing this in my ipod.
Is there any debugging I can turn on to find out what is going wrong?

IPod does play MP3 surely?
Just a quickie.
Doesn't IPod run normal MP3 files? I thought it did.
My family was thinking of getting me one for my 54th birthday. If It can't
play normal MP3 files, I'll just stick with my beautiful Chinese P1 MP3/Mp4
player.
That's it really.
All the best

Try this.....
Just switch OFF Video by selecting:
Video TAB and Switch Format:Bypass
Audio TAB set 'Encoder' to FFMPEG or LAME
In Audio Output Codec (Bottom Right TABS)
Select CTAAC+
Mode: Stereo
Bitrate slider(or type): 48 but you need to play around with this (244) and
the rest of the settings to suit.

So, it there a way to use iTunes as an encoder? I am unable to do so. I got iTunes v6.0.4.2 on this computer and I'm trying to convert all those files to m4a, that aren't supported by Apple... MPC > iTunes M4A fail. It seems to do something but the output is just 50kb unplayable m4a's. So, what should do the trick?
Or it doesn't really work and I have to use CT AAC? But then I wonder about the quality: which is the preferred AAC encoder at 160 kbps CBR?
