2 and 3 pass option does not work for Mpeg2

Post by Barnabas » Sun Sep 03, 2006 10:24 am

None of the following choices work in MediaCoder

Fixed quality
2-pass
3-Pass

Gives the usual "The transcoding is not successful" error when using mencoder as the backend

When using FFMpg as the backend, it does encode when set to the above, but only does 1 pass, even though it's set for 2 or 3 passes.

It would be great if it would have the ability to use other codecs on installed on the computer, such as huffy or DV codecs. The Sony DV codec option does not work.

I have to say that this is a VERY useful program, and I will be happy to make a donation if I could just get the 2 and 3 pass option working on mpeg-2 encoding.

Thanks

2-pass, 3-Pass are currently only available for Xvid and X264 encoding with MEncoder as backend.

Are 1 and 2 pass encoding going to be added any time soon? How about an option to use an external encoder such as Cinema Craft basic?

Any plans to enable use of the Huffy codec?

Those will be added.
Good ideas are always welcome. Please provide me with more info and that will help me.

Donation

Hi,

Glad to hear that 2 and 3 pass for MPEG-2 will be added, (soon I hope)

I made a donation yesterday towards this excellent program. Hope everyone does this same. Although it took me a couple days to get comfortable with the program, it has already allowed me to convert a problem file that I could not get correctly encoded by any other method.

A couple of features that I would love to see added are.

Ability to use other installed codecs, such a Huffy. The Panasonic DV codec does not seem to work. Being able to convert to DV would be nice.

Being able to use the Cinema Craft Basic encoder if possible.

Thanks for the great program and keep up the great work!

2-pass mode with FFMPEG is supported now.

2 and 3 pass option

Post by Barnabas » Tue Sep 05, 2006 3:35 pm

Tried the new 2 pass option for mpeg-2 files, but on the first pass, it writes it as an mpg file. When it starts the 2nd pass it gives the "The transcoding is not successful" error.

3 pass is ignored btw.

Have you set audio encoder to FFMPEG? You may also need to set "resize", "fps" and "resample" options, as MPEG-2 has restrictions on those. You can use the MPEG maker extension which will be set those options to a valid range.
I don't know how FFMPEG supports 3-pass. The "-pass" option only accept 1 and 2.

EDIT: seems I left out resample option in FFMPEG command line (will fix this soon)
EDIT2: A quick update for the issue, also added 2-pass option in MPEG maker.

latest updates broke 2 pass again

Post by Barnabas » Fri Sep 08, 2006 2:03 am

Hi,

While the 2 pass and quality setting had been working since the last couple of upgrades, now they have gotten broken again.

Also, where is the setting that used to be available in MediaCoder that allows us to change encoder setting such as maximum/minimum bitrate and other encoding settings?
