The old Encoding Guide (see Tips & Guides below) used Xvid in AVI and Xvid in MKV.
This was achieved via the FFmpeg encoder, which I chose without thinking about the resultant quality. Maybe too simplistic!
To do this, in builds before 5010, I had to set video source = Bypass, else it wouldn't convert.
Apparently, Stanley didn't like my doing this and removed the Bypass source from build 5010. Now I cannot use Ffmpeg for Xvid.
This was most likely the sensible thing to do, after all, it is the Xvid encoder that gave the quality that Xvid is renowned for.
It is logical to use the Xvid encoder for the Xvid format and, possibly, misleading of me to suggest otherwise.
However:
(1) for the AVI container, all I had to change was the video encoder (Xvid) and the source (Auto or MEncoder), but, it takes 2-3x longer than does FFmpeg, which may suggest higher quality (used Adv. Simple Profile L5).
(2) the Xvid/Xvid combo won't work for the MKV container. Even with audio disabled, the various video sources (incl. Auto) gave error 13 (video source). With audio present as either Mp3/FFmpeg or LC-AAC/Nero and Muxer on Auto, it gives error 11.
Looks like Xvid is not available for MKV!
Guess I'll use MPEG4 video.

Re: Xvid has problems in build 5010
You can still using ffmpeg to encode xvid by setting ffmpeg as video encoder, though using xvidcore to encode directly is always the fastest.
Using former "bypass" for video source will cause video frame data not going through mediacoder and causing lots of features not applicable.

When things work together, things work.

Stanley: I wonder if you have checked lately!
As I stated above, I cannot use Format = Xvid with Encoder = FFmpeg and Source = Auto, MEncoder or FFmpeg!
Secondly, what is "xvidcore"? If you mean Xvid is set for both Format and Encoder, then, you are using a different program than I.
MC 5010 takes 2-3 times longer with Xvid/Xvid in AVI on a 100-sec VOB than FFmpeg did in build 4797 (with Bypass).
So, how can you say Xvid/Xvid is faster and that I can still use FFmpeg ??
Please explain.

Re: 2011-5010 Xvid has problems with MKV
Hi,
Stanley's, statement is a bit confusing..........
Btw xvidcore is the encoding module/engine for encoding to xvid format...which can be found under mediacoder's codec folder as xvidcore.dll

Re: 2011-5010 Xvid has problems with MKV
Thanks, but, in practice, is the xvidcore dll invoked when the Video Encoder is set to Xvid?
