avi to mpeg2

hi,

I transcoded a movie from avi to mpeg 2. I used the settings suggested by "itspete" in the "Tips & Guides - section". It was a very fast job either I'm using an "ahtlon XP 2200" with 512MB RAM. :lol:
after that, I checked the result by watching the transcoded movie. I used VLC ... and everything was ok!!!
but if I try to watch this transcoded movie on my standalone dvd-player (LG DV 9900), those black stripes on the top and on the button of the stream disapeard. :?: :?: :?: hmmm I also tried to change settings of my dvd-player (panscann <-> letterbox) nothing happened.
I'm sorry for my english...... but I hope sombody could help me!!!

Thank you. Glad it works.
Please Do not use VLC. It has some nasty bugs and will play even
wrongly coded files.
Use Zoom Player (I use this), or MPlayer (supplied with MediaCoder),
or Media Player Classic etc.

The stripes at the top and bottom suggest that you may need to
CROP them, or try a slightly different setting.
I have tested the settings and I don't seem to have that problem.
However, it does not mean to say that there is not a problem.
I'll have a look and see if I can improve on the settings.

well, but I've still got that problem (transcoded files have black stripes by playing with wmp or zoom-player but not on my TV)
hmm... I think I'll try to creat an dvd with these transcoded mpg-files... up to now I just burned them on an dvd-rw and check the result on my dvd-player.... maybe it will help. I'll post my experience soon.

Hi.
New setting for you in 'Tips And Guides'. I've tested it and there's
no stripes, just perfect, as we like it.

Just a note...
AVI comes in 3 types:
H.264, AVC1 and VSSH (don't use VSSH)
H.264 I think correct. (it works for me).

Please let me know how you get on. with this.

Just one other thing. DVD-RW may be ok for checking things, but they
can give additional problems on a DVD.
Over the last 10 years of so, I have been looking into the way blank
disks work and effect DVD\VCD playing.
The conclusion is that a true DVD is a DVD-R disk. +R and all that, may
cause problems in one form or another.
DVD-RW's generally will pay on most DVD players but not older players.
The resulting disk may have 'skipping', 'film flare' and 'Hanging' and even
incorrect film size.
That's not to say they are bad. Just be aware of the problems that could
arise.
