Does mediacoder convert to .avi files using a video codec that has nothing to do with mpeg4, I mean how do you do that?
You don't want to use an MPEG-4 video codec in your output? Choose something other than XviD, DivX and x264. Those three are MPEG-4 codecs - XviD and DivX is MPEG-4 ASP and x264 is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. Try Theora or WM7/8/9.
I can't think of any good reason to specify "anything as long as its not MPEG-4". Would you mind sharing your reason?

I'll have to try theora but wm7 still seems to read out as mpeg4 and also because my nero mpeg4 decoder ran out and when i play a video that is decoded as mpeg4 when i rewind or forward it messes up so basically I am looking to use other video codecs with the container of .avi. I know there are lots of other codecs out there like vp codecs .etc.
"nero mpeg4 decoder"? Is it for decoding the video for playback on your machine or is it for decoding MPEG-4 to encode as MPEG-2 when burning DVDs?
Modern DVD players should be able to take MPEG-4 ASP (DivX or XviD) videos, so you should be able to just burn your movie DVD as a "data" DVD and it'll work. Unfortunately, most players still don't recognise the MKV container.

The nero mpeg 4 decoder is just for the nero software I have and yeah I think it is for decoding mpeg4 to mpeg2 when making a dvd. My software is just messed up I think as I don't have a trial version. Anyways it would be nice if mediacoder lets you chose system installed codecs as well as mediacoder codecs when converting video files.
