GPU Encoding is now super slow

Post by kwreid » Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:34 pm

I recently updated my Mediacoder iPod edition to 0.7.3.4672 from 0.7.3.4633 and found that my CUDA encoding speed has dropped dramatically. Where I used to be getting between 700 and 800 FPS I'm now getting less than 100.

I removed and reinstalled the previous version (4633) and CUDA encoding was still slow. I'm at a loss as to why.

Has anyone else noticed this change?

I suspect the CUDA encoder has timed out again. Set your time and date to something in March and see if that helps. It worked for me on my laptop.

It's worse this time, cos you don't get an error, it just switches to encoding using the CPU and doesn't tell you that is what it's doing.

I tried setting time back to April, March, Feb, and no difference.

It's definitely doing something other than CPU encoding too. When I do CPU encoding all CPUs are busy and (on fast) I get about 400FPS. When I use GPU encoding it only goes about 100FPS and CPU usage is quite low.

I've had some success using CUDA in other versions of Mediacoder.

I've been having problems with the 64bit version of MediaCoder for Ipod.
I've been able to get my fast CUDA encoding back by using 32bit version for iPod, and 64bit version for the general MediaCoder.

So it seems that something's messed up with my 64bit MediaCoder iPod only, but I have no idea what.

Installed the latest version of x64 (0.7.5.4710) and it's given me the expired message.
If I set my date back to July, it works again, but it's back to being slow (65FPS where I was getting over 700 before).
If I switch to CPU (Fast) it will go up to 432FPS, but that's still slower than GPU on x64.

Anyone from Mediacoder listening??

The version currently available for 64bit is 4720 but none of the 3 links are currently working.

The update packages are 4712 for 32bit, but the 64bit option is 4710 (the version I already have).

So there's currently no way for me to update to anything newer.

The 0.7.5.4720 is now available and there has been no change since previous versions. GPU encoding still runs at about 65FPS in 64bit version. CPU encoding runs at about 4-500FPS. GPU encoding on 32bit version runs between 7-800FPS.
