Encoding time

Post by beyondinvisible » Sat Nov 29, 2008 7:40 pm

I tried out the updated settings and realised that it's now taking me around 9 hours to encode a 1 hour video file. Is there any way to bring down the encoding time? The earlier settings took about half the time it's currently taking.

Try changing the following settings.

Rate-distortion optimal quantization = Enable only for the final encode
Threads (0 for auto) = 0
Maximum B-frames between I and P frames = 3

Thanks for the change in settings B!ink. It's really bought down the encoding time.

I went through Fabio Sonatti's pdf and couldn't understand 99% of it :P . Guess I'm not going to be meddling with the settings just yet.

The presentation is rather technical, but I found one totally epic tip: use an anamorphic resolution. It really saves bandwidth without looking ugly! :D

Mike-RaWare, Hi! I'd like to know what you do to use anamorphic resolution. I tried resizing according to Fabio's instructions, but the result is a stretched video. I want to know where to enable it. I tried using mp4box muxer in mediacoder. thank you!

Have you tried setting the aspect ratio in the 'Picture' tab to the ratio of your original video (I assume 16:9)?

Decoder set to mencoder , Encoder set to x264 , MKV and MKVmerge or MP4 and MP4BOX in container.

For your existing files with the wrong AR:

If playing on a PC, most players (or any with ffdshow) allow overriding /setting a default AR instead of the one specified in the file.

If playing on a standalone device, you can change just the AR in the file, no re-encoding necessary.
If you prefer using a GUI to do it, MKVtoolnix for MKVs, Yamb for MP4s,
otherwise use the eg. commandline tools in the two packages.
