H.265 has had its source code released. It's still a pre-alpha but useable supposedly. It's official name, HEVC, stands for High Efficiency Video Coding and is supposed to address the problems H.264 had with 4K and other high bitrate video.
Can't wait for it to be integrated into MediaCoder...
