wrong video duration (mp4 to h.264 or xvid)

Post by yahalom » Sun Mar 14, 2010 2:19 pm

I use the latest version of mediacoder. I do a conversion of a video encoded with mpeg-4. The duration shown by mediacoder before the conversion is 26.2 seconds but when I play the video in vlc player it shows the video as 28 seconds. After converting of the video from the mpeg-4 to h.264 or xvid using mediacoder (and few different setting I have tried after this failure) I always get an output video of 26 seconds. Of course the conversion is not good as it makes the video faster and jumpy. For longer piece (10 minutes) I got 50 seconds less and this is visible in the result. What can cause such problem? how can it be fixed?

It seems to me that the header (metadata) in your file is corrupted to 26 sec.
MediaCoder simply converts to suit 26 sec.
I have checked a number of MPEG4/AVI and AVC/MP4 files -- they show the same duration in VLC , MediaCoder and Explorer (AVI only).

I get these files from my panasonic FZ35 camera. Maybe the header is wrong but then why vlc and other converters are working fine? and is there a way to configure mediaConverter to ignore the header and work like the other converters?

Before we start to blame the file or MC, let's check on the header, by opening the file in mediaInfo, a freebie. to read its metadata.
If you don't have it, then use the version in MediaCoder, by selecting one of your files in the queue and click: Item > Details of Selected File.

The other point is: how does it play in MPlayer (click the blue play button)?

The duration of the file in the mediaInfo looks fine. Playing with the blue button also looks ok and the time shown is fine although vlc shows the video nicer. So lets start from scratch, why after conversion from a 6 minutes file I get 5.24 minutes? what can cause this change? This only happens with mediaCoder, I tried myVideoConverter, anyVideoConverter and Leowo video converter and they all worked fine...

All your conversions in MediaCoder are stated as being 10% quicker. This may be a clue!

Secondly, you don't mention your tab settings, so we cannot help in that direction.

Lastly, it may be your build. In your initial Post (14 March) you claim to use the latest build, which suggests build 4612.
Recently I upgraded from build 4606, which works very well, to 4616 and most of my Presets fail to work, mainly because they use FFmpeg as their video encoder.
This is an example of recent bugs, bugs that may be affecting your conversions.
Today I went back to 4606!
I suggest you try an earlier version/build than 4612, such as 4606 or 4582, by doing a clean unistall first (Revo Uninstaller).
