ATI stream technology!!!

Post by hetrobob » Tue Dec 23, 2008 6:02 am

Hi!

Love the program, just what I was looking for! I just wondered if there were plans to incorporate the new ATIstream technology just brought out by ATI to use GPU power for video encoding? Apparently it is open source technology.

Thanks
Bob

That sounds really cool! But MediaCoder is just a front end for other codecs, so the developer depends on other people to implement your suggestion.

Like Mike-RaWare, MediaCoder is a front-end for a bunch of codecs and tools. I am not able to implement new features for so many codecs. Every codec has its maintainer. If you find some useful patch for the codecs, I am willing to build with them and update the codecs.

The performance of the graphic card for video encoding is much higher than the performance of the CPU, but not as much as many people think. It should be around factor 5 and not factor 100.

You can also get much more performance with X264 if you reduce the input resolution. I am working with 640x400 and I cant really see a difference 50 cm in front of my Hanns.G 27,5", so at least 960x600 should nearly perfect. 640x400 sounds terrible low, but a good player (tried it with media player classic) can scale it up with a bilinear filter without any problem and you have a factor 9 higher performance than with 1920x1200. In HD videos it is not completely the same, but I you compare it with the problems of the available GPU encoders this is nothing.

About the performance of gpu encoding, it's true. I tried out Badaboom because it looked promissing but aside from only being able to encode to baseline (and I think now also main) it was not even faster then using MediaCoder/my cpu.

I was using a Nvidia 8800GT vs a Intel Q6600 Quadcore btw.
MediaCoder settings:

x264 (backend/source: mencoder, fps: 23,976, Fabio Sonatti's settings) + nero aac 64 in matroska
