4042: MEncoder just stalls?

I use 800 k for recorded tv mostly. That means at most the resolution is 704 x X but most often it is 640 x 480). The result is an okay quality meant for archiving. 1000 to 1200 k would give really good quality (everything above would be overkill).

For 720p movies I find it really hard to find a good value. Some of them can be compressed very well (under 4000 or even 3000). This is mostly the case for animated movies like Shrek or. But when converting "real" hdtv with fast scenes (action movies, etc) it can be really hard to find a good compromis between quality and size.

I suggest you try out different movies and scenes (by configuring the time tab in order to convert only small parts of it, like 2 minutes and try for yourself. I noticed that 4000 to 4500 works for most movies in 720p.

x264 (backend/source: mencoder, fps: 23,976, Fabio Sonatti's settings) + nero aac 64 in matroska
