Build 5302: chapters from Add Track have missing frames

Post by meRobs » Sat Dec 15, 2012 11:37 pm

If chapters are selected from a DVD using Add Track and separately converted to the same format (MP4 or MPEG2) and placed in series in a video editor (Adobe Premiere), they have missing frames where they join.

For example, converting a full Title ("Whole Track") the result is a file of 11 min 57 sec 0 frames (11:57:00).
When the 12 chapters are separately converted to the same format (same settings), the total duration of the files is only 11:48:20, ie, missing 8 sec 20 frames.
When placed in series along a Timeline, there were obviously missing frames at each join -- the video jumps.
The 205 missing frames are shared anong the 11 joins.
On the other hand, the full Track plays smoothly through the points where each chapter starts.

Edit: later I tried another Track that had exactly 12 chapters. The 'Whole Track' gave a file of 30:58:11 min, whereas, the 12 separate chapters had a total length of 30:50:11, exactly 8 sec (200 frames) less, similar to the above. When played, the full file played smoothly all the way, whereas, the 12 shorter files in series jumped at their joins showing that frames were missing.

I did some more testing.
I chose a PAL DVD using AC3 audio and with each Track a separate VTS Title.
I chose a short Track with 7 chapters and converted to H264/AAC/Mp4 to suit Adobe Premiere.

Converting the "Whole Track" gave a file with a duration of 3:58:07, ie 3 min, 58 sec and 3 frames.
When converting the 7 separate chapters:
(1) the 7th failed to convert (Error 15 -- muxer) probably because it is only 1 frame long -- it is common for an authoring application to place a chapter marker 'at' the end. The loss of this chapter (1 frame) is not critical.
(2) the total duration of the 6 other chapters is 3:53:24, ie short by 108 frames.

I compared these 'chapters' with VOBs created via DVDshrink by ripping each chapter separately.
Placing all VOBs on a Timeline gave continuous smooth flow across each join (no missingv files).
I then aligned then to see what was missing.

The result:
The missing files were at the end of each chapter converted by Add Tack in mediaCoder.
The gaps were: 13 frames from the first, 21 from the second, 21, 19, 13 and 21 from the 6th.
