Build 5240: Xvidcore still fails as encoder

Post by meRobs » Tue May 15, 2012 1:20 pm

In my routine testing of Mediacoder (see: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=10383), I had been using Xvid as the encoder for the Xvid format until build 5140, when it was replaced by Xvidcore. Since then I have used Xvidcore, which seems the logical choice for Xvid!
It has worked when converting a small VOB of 100 sec duration to Xvid/MP3 in AVI.
I am using the 32-bit version of MediaCoder on 64-bit Win7 (earlier, I had tried the 64-bit version but it failed, so I kept using the 32-bit).

However, occasionally, I had tried Xvidcore on larger VOB files or those in a diferent container and it failed.
For example, it failed in builds 5002, 5130, 5185 and 5197, as reported as a bug at: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=11006.

More recently, when testing the quality of video Codecs in viewtopic.php?f=17&t=11978, I found that I had to switch to FFmpeg to get any output in Xvid for a VOB of ~9 min duration. Fortunately, the result was excellent.
This is still true for build 5240: Xvidcore works on small VOBs but not on large ones or on MP4 source files.

However, this may not satisfy those users who do mult-pass encoding to Xvid. This is because, 2-pass encoding fails for FFmpeg (for me, at least).

Hence, please (1) fix up Xvidcore, (2) explain why it fails or (3) allow FFmpeg to do 2-pass.
Thanks

Also, before changing the details in the Encoding Guide, I decided to test Xvidcore on a small 100-sec VOB, which usually worked.
I repeated the conversion 3 times with maybe a 3-5 sec wait between each. The results:
(1) worked in 30 sec
(2) completed in 32 sec and
(3) 28% through the file it ceased/crashed.
I re-opened MediaCoder and repeated this sequence a few times with the same result.
On changing the video encoder to FFmpeg, the conversions repeated with success.

The xvidcore hasn't been updated for a while. It's weird that it fails in newer build.

I have not found this error on a regular basis. Xvidcore usually works on my small 1:40 min VOB file that I use for routine testing.
I rarely try other formats with Xvid/Xvidcore.

But, certainly Xvidcore has failed on VOBs greater than 5 min on many builds.

And since you, Stanley, are surprised I re-checked.

I re-installed build 5100 to use the earlier equivalent of the Xvidcore encoder, called "Xvid". It worked on the 1:40 min VOB and crashed on a 4 min MP4.
I then tried build 5150, just after Xvid had been replaced by Xvidcore. It worked on the 1:40 min VOB, crashed on an 8 min VOB and crashed on a 4 min MP4.

Hence, Xvidcore seems to reliably fail on VOBs larger than ~2min and on MP4 files.
Changing the encoder to FFmpeg for Xvid always seems to work.

Don't why xvidcore works for me, including 2-pass mode.

Stanley: what size was your source file (duration and MB)? Xvidcore always works on small files.
What were your settings on the video tab?
32- or 64-bit?
What build?

There is something very wrong if MediaCoder behaves differently in different PCs.
Please give your tab settings so I can compare!

I just tried build 5245, which included another version of Xvidcore.
I used the settings given in the Encoding Guide for Xvid/AVI and changed the video encoder from FFmpeg to Xvidcore.
MediaCoder failed 45% through a VOB of 435 MB and 8.52 min duration with an error message "... must close" etc.
Still no good!
