Build 5198-Consistent crashing after encoding

Post by dochuzz » Wed Nov 09, 2011 5:42 pm

I am trying to output to MPEG4 or h.264 as per the instructions in this thread. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 on an Intel P4 3.0GHz with 1Gb RAM(Yes, I should have more, I know).

Now the problem. I've tried all three of these file formats, they are series episodes, so the format is the same throughout, and tried different episodes within the series and come up with the same problem. After encoding to the specified format, mencoder.exe experiences a problem and crashes, with no output files to be found. I'm trying to convert these to view on my xbox360 with little result. Normally I'd scrap mencoder, but there has been alot of success from people I know using it for the PS3. Any help would be appreciated.

Of far more importance are the settings you choose on the Video, Audio and Container tabs.
A good combo of settings should work on almost any source file.

Your best bet is to take a small file of the type you use, maybe by trimming an existing one down, and then encoding it using one or more of the suggestions in the Encoding Guide, listed under Tips & Guides (link below).
Try them even if they are not exactly what you want.

Then, try changing one parameter at a time until you are happy.
Remember that you can usually mix a video group from one column with the audio group from another.
Report back with what you find.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice Rob. I just finished trying the first file running it straight from the guide you linked me to, as well as a mix from the MPEG2, so far still no sucess... Maybe, as I've feared, my comp isn't quite as bulletproof as I always played...

Does that mean that the conversion worked (gave an output), and maybe played on a software player like VLC or Windows Media Player, but they don't play in your Xbox?

My apologies. No there is still no output file. I think I'm going to try wiping mencoder off the compy and trying a fresh install, sometimes these things happen. Working today and tomorrow 12/hr shifts, will update when I get a chance.

I suggest u switching to avisynth or ffmpeg as video source instead of mencoder. They can handle mkv better.

Well I'll be gosh darned! avisynth was hanging about the time actual encoding started, but when I brought up ffmpeg as the source, an hour later all was well, it finished the file and I just got done watching it on the xbox. Thanks guys! Maybe there's a place that I should post these settings for future use...

Glad to hear that. Avisynth source should also work if u have a good codec pack installed in ur system.
