Build 5100: Infinite loop using x264 to transcode DVD

I am transcoding a DVD with several episodes of a TV show using MediaCoder x64 build 5100 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.

I have the unencrypted DVD on my hard drive and have used the 'Add Track' option to add each of the separate episodes.

I have set up to transcode as follows:

Container: MP4
Muxer: MP4Box

Video: H.264
Encoder: x264
Mode: 2-Pass
Bitrate: 768 Kbps
Resolution: 480x272
De-interlace: Auto

Audio: LC-AAC
Encoder: FAAC
Bitrate: 128 Kbps

The first couple of tracks transcode fine. However on the third, during the first pass, at about 5% complete, the video seems to jump back to the start. The percent complete keeps climbing, but the video keeps repeating the first few minutes of the show over and over. MediaCoder never seems to be able to get out of this loop.

I tried a different DVD on a different PC with the same settings and got a similar result. This time the first three tracks transcoded correctly and the fourth track got caught in an infinite loop.

Using the same source DVD directory, but using different encoding tools (AVS Video Converter 7.1 and Nero Recode) using similar settings transcoded the files correctly. As I am able to encode the same files with a different tool, I am fairly confident that the original files are not corrupt.

Is this a bug with MediaCoder (or the x264 encoder), or am I doing something wrong?

Yes, I must confess I have just experienced much the same problem in build 5100, but the x86 version.
I didn't report it because the two DVDs (in PAL) were created by someone with a cheap authoring App, and I had blamed that.
In each case, there was just one main clip/movie, which DVDfab failed to 'see' and thus failed to rip. So, I used DVDshrink to rip them.
In MediaCoder, both Add Track and using the equivalent IFO directly, gave a loop from the end of the ~2 h clips.

However, I keep build 4640 on my PC as a safeguard and, as expected, it correctly converted using Add Track (or IFO) without looping.

Thanks - I might try finding that earlier build to see whether it resolves the problem.

Build 5100: Convert DVD will back to begining again

Post by Yuen » Mon Apr 11, 2011 10:48 am

Starting from using 2011 5000 - 5100 (32bit or 64bit)
when I convert a DVD into MP4, no matter using which encoder (x264, CUDA, intel)
the conversion job is already at the middle, but suddenly will back to the DVD begining again
(e.g. the conversion is already at 20mins 19sec, but will back to 00mins 00sec again)
When I try to convert it using chapter by chapter in different job, this symptom happen again
(e.g. when I convert chapter 3 only, it will suddenly back to chapter 1 begining during conversion)
but this symptom did not appear in 0.7.5.4799

Thanks in advance.

Are you using the IFO for that DVD title or Add Track (MediaCOder) or directly loading the VOBs?

I am using add track > select track or chapter to convert

Suggest you try using the IFO file itself (see: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8082&start=0).
Even though this is equivalent to Add Track it may work better.
Let us know what happens.

I have seen some strange behaviour recently with Add Track in the recent builds.
Unfortunately, I haven't the time at the moment to experiment for you -- I will try in a few days.

Alternatively, use build 4640. It works,

I have try 2 DVDs in this morning, and got the same result
still loop back to the begining during conversion.
One is around 46 mins loop back, the other is around 32 mins, so I think it is not in pattern.
p.s.1: I am using 2011 64bit R2 build 5125 this time
p.s.2: 32bit and 64bit 0.7.5.4799 work well on the above 2 DVDs

For the purposes of Testing the various builds of MediaCoder, I had ripped a PAL DVD to my HDD. The VIDEO_TS folder consists of one large 'Title', ie, 5 VOBs of the same title, VTS_01_1 to VTS_01_5. I use this to test 'Add Track', as explained in the Test Reports (see Tips & Guides, below). I choose 2 short 'Tracks' from the Add Track window.
However, not being patient, I don't usually wait until the conversions complete. Also, the conversion is to MPEG2 (see Report).

To test your situation, I used the same DVD (actually the HDD, which may make a difference?) but chose a Track that was 20:48 min.
Then, I converted using both the settings for MPEG4/AVI and for MP4, as described in the Encoding Guide (Tips & Guides).
Both worked without looping for build 5126 and 5018.

So, I cannot reproduce your result. I have the 16-bit version with XP SP3.
