NVENC & GTX650 Ti Boost - scaling, fps, and seeking issues

Post by Etelka » Fri Feb 27, 2015 11:38 pm

Hello,

I am trying out build x64 0.8.34.5695 using Windows 7 64, and a GTX650 Ti Boost graphics card.

Firstly, it is fast! Much faster than I was expecting, it is encoding at 22x speed, and the picture quality is very very good!

However if I resize a video by going to Picture tab / Resize (choose a size) / Scale (select 'default') - the encoding speed drops a lot! (resizing a 1280x720 clip to 640x360 results in the encoding speed dropping from 22x to 4x).

I have one particular clip with a size of 1920x816, for whatever reason this clip loses its aspect ratio when any resizing is applied (though switching encoder to x264 or CUDA retains the aspect ratio)

Setting frame rate (in picture / frame rate) doesn't seem to do anything (all resulting clips are 25fps).

Finally, although the picture quality is very good, none of these clips encoded using NVENC will seek correctly (there is a delay of around 15 seconds before the clip will begin playing again using VLC).

The settings I am using (I am still learning what these settings mean, so I include them for it is possible I am messing them up some place!)

The 'Encoder' settings :

Device Type : CUDA (I am not sure which device type to select here)
Encoding Preset : High Quality
Maximum B Frames : 2
IDR Period : 15
QP Level for all frames : 0
Dynamic GOP : unticked (NVENC crashes if I enable this)
Deblock : ticked
Enable Cabac : ticked
Slice Count : 0
Enable SPS : ticked
Motion Vector Precision : Quarter Pixel

The 'Video' tab settings :

Video Bitrate : 768
Buffer Size : is blank
Max Bitrate : 5000
Min Bitrate : 384

Rate Mode : Average Bitrate
Format : H.264
Encoder : NVENC
Source : Auto (Mencoder)

The 'Summary' tab :

Target Format
Container : MP4
Muxer : MP4BOX
Video : H.264
Encoder : NVENC
Mode : Average Bitrate
Bitrate : 768
Resolution : 640x360
Frame Rate : 25.00fps
De-interlace : Auto
Audio LC-AAC
Encoder : Nero Encoder
Bitrate : 96
Sample Rate : 48000

I have the seeking issue as well.

Seems it is a keyframe thing, if the current MP4 container works the same as the old formats I'm more familiar with.

I found your post searching for a solution. Hopefully someone will answer or at least point us in the right direction.

Using MKV container has no problem.

This issue was already solved in newer releases.

I download "MediaCoder-x64-0.8.52.5920.exe" from the web. But it didn't work with my windows version!
