How I sure if CUDA is being used?

Discussing about advanced video encoding techniques including GPU encoding, distributive encoding and segmental encoding. Topics are not limited to MediaCoder.

How I sure if CUDA is being used?

Post by lcdsantos » Mon Apr 25, 2011 2:09 am

I have a very low power CPU computer. It´s a Asrock nettop with Atom 330 dual-core and Nvidia ION.

NVIdia ION supports CUDA.

I a registered user of the amazing CoreAVC H.264 decoder, which can use CUDA.

When I´m watching a H.264 video with CoreAVC the CoreAVC´s systray icon show me that CUDA is effectively been used.

How can I be sure if MediaCoderHQ is using CUDA as well?

I´m using latest version (0.8.1 build 5135, Apr 15 2011).

After some rearch I think that CUDA enable H.264 encoder should be avaiable to me in the "Format" option in the "VIdeo" tab configuration.

But this option is not been showed.

Probably MediaCoder is not recognizing my nettop Ion as CUDA capable...

But it´s CUDA capable: It´s a ION. Look at the end: http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html

And, as I stated, my CoreAVC 2.5 plays nicelly 1080p videos using CUDA.

How can I "force" to enable H.264 CUDA encoding?

I´m using the latest NViddia drivers (270.61)

The MediaCoder console is showing:
MediaCoder Version 0.8.1 build 5135 (built on Apr 15 2011, 02:07:19)

MediaCoder is a freeware. You can freely redistribute it under its redistribution terms and conditions.

GPU: <ION> CUDA 1.1 device 0 detected
H.264 Encoding: No
So, my ION´s CUDA can be used just for decode but not for encode H.264???? :-(

Hi,

You can enable CUDA H.264 encoding by unchecking "auto select" from the "encoder" box under the "video tab" and change from "x264" to "CUDA Encoder". To confirm whether CUDA is used, download the freeware tools MSI Afterburner, EVGA precision tool or GPU-Z, install one of them, start encoding using CUDA H.264 encoder and use these tools to check the GPU load, if there's GPU Load during encoding then you are using CUDA to encode video.

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

easier way to do is Open Task Manager
& chk CPU % it should be 0% used
you can also use GPU-Z for better results 8)
