MEncoder missing as multiplexer.

Post by VzIo » Wed Oct 29, 2014 5:33 pm

I had been using 0.7.2.4570 to encode Xvid for my DVD player; when the audio was in a format the player recognized I would copy it using MEncoder as a multiplexer, the only one that allowed me to do that. Recently I decided to upgrade to 0.8.31.5648, which lacks MEncoder: ffmpeg does the job, and I can play the video in VLC Player, but my DVD player can't seem to pick up the audio. Is there any way to add MEncoder to the Multiplexer options manually? Why was it removed? Thank you.

What other settings are you using? As in container and video/audio formats because they will decide what encoders and multiplexers you have use.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

Xvid, 2-pass, encoder and source Auto; copy audio (I copy ac-3 streams; PCM is pre-selected for when i need to re-encode), encoder and source Auto Select; AVI container. FFmpeg and FFmbc are my only options for muxers, and I don't know how the Remuxer feature works. MEncoder is what I need.

Well, that took a while. Had to searching around for a while but I found this from MediaCoder's blog post regarding the release of v0.8.22:
Another note is that MEncoder is removed from muxers as it does a poor job in muxing.
So I guess your only option if you can only use MEncoder would be to use a version prior to 0.8.22. You can download older versions here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaCod ... s#download. Last release before 0.8.22 would be 0.8.21.5398 which was released on 2013-05-16.
Still, I'm not quite sure why your DVD player would have issues with a file muxed with a different muxer than MEncoder. Theoretically, as long as the codecs are the same, it should be the same. Unless it changed headers or something... might be worth comparing the extended MediaInfo readouts to see what's changed.

It didn't work. Apparently using MEncoder as a muxer only works on some 0.7.X.XXXX versions. What should I do if it indeed "changed headers or something"?

Not sure. There's basically no advanced options for FFmpeg multiplexer unless you know command line arguments. And that's getting out of my knowledgeable area.
You know, if there is no real reason to upgrade to a newer version, you might as well keep using 0.7.2.4570 since you know that worked. Or you might have to always re-encode the audio stream instead of copying it if you need the newer version.

I tried everything in every version (which proved very dangerous) and I'll go back to my dear 4570; I only upgraded to get faster encoding. I'm still intrigued as to why my DVD player does what it does. Thank you very much.

It is possible to update the encoders yourself I think. That way you can get the faster encoding while keeping Mencoder. I've done that a couple of times myself but never with a version as old as 0.7.2.4570 but it should still work. Just download the encoders if they're free or open source and just install them into the "tools" or "tools64" folder in your MediaCoder installation directory.
DVD/Bluray players and TVs can be really fickle when playing media that's been home encoded. Not uncommon for a small difference to result in incompatibility. For example, this thread (viewtopic.php?f=17&t=13191) was about a Panasonic Smart TV that couldn't play MKV embedded subtitles because of a header compression issue...

Also it only works when MEncoder is used as the encoder for Xvid, but later versions don't allow me to do that. Can MEncoder be used now to encode Xvid somehow?

Seems that MEncoder was basically removed because other encoders/muxers were better at doing the same job... You'd have to talk to Stanley for specifics though.
