help anyone? - AAC to AC3(5.1)

Post by pootler » Fri Aug 20, 2010 8:31 am

Hello I am new to the forums.

I have video with 5.1 AAC sound.

I wish to pass through ( i.e not decode or encode) the video but convert the AAC (5.1)sound to AC3 ( 5.1 )

Basically just replacing the stream with another - or alternatively, adding another track with an AC3 encoding on it?

Can mediacoder do this??

Many thanks
Leo

Welcome to the forum.
The short answer is yes.

The long:
On the Video tab check Copy Video
Audio tab: select FFmpeg as the encoder and AC3 as format with the desired bitrate (usually 384 or 448 kbps for DVDs)
Sound tab: choose Channel = 5.1 channels
Container tab: select one that is able to take your video format with AC3 as audio, eg, AVI

Ah well i,ve tried but I still can't get it to do this.

I am using it in a windows XP virtual machine( i have a mac)

It says things like ''wrong output'' and such even though I am quite competent at this sort of stuff!

To passthrough video do I have to enable it and then tick 'copy video'? - or do I just tick copy video and not 'enable video'

I select ac3/5.1 and all the other formats - but no such output occurs.

Is there a log output? ( i don't have the VM powered up)

thanks

Leo

If you wish to keep the video, but unchanged, check enable and copy.
Suggest you try Source = MPlayer on audio tab.
Maybe the container or multiplexer settings are incorrect.
It's hard to help when you have spplied little info on what you want or the settings you have.
To see the 'log' click F6 while Mediacoder is open.

Thanks merobbs,

I think I have it working now.

Suprisingly, I use a Mac, and it runs nicely using Crossover.( i.e Wine)

The only thing i haven't had time to check is the channel mapping - going from AAC5.1 to AC3 5.1 requires an adjustment to the center channel mapping.

If that works then I am good to go! :)

You may also try iDealshare VideoGo to convert AC3 to AAC with this guide from http://www.idealshare.net/audio-convert ... -mp3.html

It can convert AC3 audio to AAC or convert video in AC3 to video in AAC.

If you only convert AC3 audio to AAC, you may also try this method http://www.avdshare.com/ac3-to-aac-converter
