Question about downmixing stereo to mono

I have the latest MC, and I plan to downmix some tracks from stereo to mono (for less space and better sound). But, when I go to the options, there are two versions of Mono: left and right. That must mean that one of the stereo tracks will be lost on the process, right? Is there a way to downmix without losing tracks?
