Latest version issues in Win7 x64

I'm trying to convert an MKV file to H.264 and it keeps getting around 70-80% done and then stops responding. It'll either just crash or tell me something about the H.264.exe (or whatever the conversion engine is called) stopped responding. Is this a common thing or something else? The installation of Win7 is brand new.
