MCFE avi output does not comply with RIFF format?

Greetings.
I used MCFE today to transcode a DivX avi file,
so I could change the dimensions to 320x240.
I've used MCFE for other things before but
only for the first time today to transcode a movie ...
My 11 year old XP multimedia machine will play anything beautifully
as long as the dimensions are 320x240 ...
Is it or might it be in the future possible to use the DivX codec with MCFE?
I used Xvid.
I could also use VirtualDub & aviSynth with the DivX codec
to transcode video files to 320x240 ... I only need to copy the audio soundtrack ...
How does one use aviSynth with MCFE?

Anyway, I opened the MCFE avi output with ABCavi to edit the avi tags,
but ABCavi says only that the file "does not comply with RIFF format" -
so I cannot edit or create any avi tags ...

Does anyone know something about this?
Does one need to make some pre-transcode setting to enable the RIFF format?

Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
Thank you.
Regards,
AEN
