No it is not changed. Maybe u have installed a firewall software that prevents the button to be shown.

MC first opens on the Welcome webpage !!!!

Post by meRobs » Wed Sep 30, 2009 4:58 pm

I am using MediaCoder build 4490.
Clicking the Shortcut in the Start menu doesn't always (rarely) open MC directly. Instead it opens a Welcome webpage offering to either Start MC or its Wizard. Checking the box "Do not show this welcome page at next start up" made no difference!!
By the way, I had not used the Wizard on first use of MC -- does this matter?

I found under Settings > Overall > User Interface, the parameter "do not show welcome screen ..." with the value 4490. So, I changed it to 0, the screen still popped up and on returning to the settings found that the value had reverted to 4490 again and, at least for the next opening seemed to work. This is confusing and seems unstable?!

Help.

Every time the Welcome screen opened I did check "do not show this welcome ..." before clicking 'Start MediaCider' -- every time!

I shall do a clean install again -- I shall uninstall with a more thorough Uninstaller, do a registry clean, remove both Broad Intelligence folders, re-boot and install 4490.

If you are using two version/build of mc .......everytime you switch versions you are prompt the welcome page and have to lived with that....because everytime you start a different version/build mediacoder cannot update the previous prefs file, that's what i think.

However, I have only one version (4490) on board. I would like two but at the moment I am trying to see if I can get the MediaCoder GUI to behave!

I now report on the results of doing what was suggested earlier.
In an effort to get one copy of MediaCoder (version 4490) to behave properly, I followed a suggestion by mixer and:
(1) uninstalled MC, did a registry clean, removed the MediaCoder folder and the Broad Intelligence folders from Application Data and Local Settings
(2) did a re-boot
(3) installed version 0.7.1.4490 to Program Files > MediaCoder 4490
(3) during the install, I accepted the default check boxes and just before the install finished it popped up with “unable to download and install Matroska nix” and I clicked OK

During the first day I opened and closed MC 4 times. Each time: it opened on the Welcome webpage, I clicked the check box, clicked Start MC, clicked to close the page and clicked to minimse Firefox (4 unwanted clicks)
On the second day, an opening of MC was sometimes direct and sometimes via Firefox (welcome page).
On the third day, today, much the same as above, but not reproducible.

I have been investigating the Settings and how they copy to and from Presets.
As a result, it seems that most of the apparent instability for the Welcome page (opens first but sometimes doesn't) may have arisen because some settings were overwritten by Presets and some were not.
This is discussed in the following post:

Stanley, the reality is that it has changed for many users. Denying that will just make them give up on MediaCoder.

The "Start MediaCoder" Button fails in Opera. So I have to load IE (OUCH!) and paste in the link, which works.
However, now, in version 0.7.2.4524, the welcome screen comes up EVERY time I load MediaCoder, which is getting beyond a drag.

However, I found a good solution. In MediaCoder, go to File->Settings, then Overall -> User Interface -> Do Not Show Welcome Screen, and change the value to the last 4 digits of the current version you are using (e.g. 4524). Now it is gone for good, or at least till I upgrade. It is interesting to note that it was something like 4399, so I think the code broke at this version, and forgot to update this setting after that. Maybe if you change it to 9999 it will bugger off for good.

I think I have sussed out what MC is doing! (from a study of Builds 4399 and 4522.)
Firstly, when MC is first installed and the Welcome webpage is offered, 'Do not open this welcome page..." should be checked before clicking on Start or the Wizard.
Then, MC should deposit the current build number as the value for 'Do not show welcome ...' under Settings > Overall > User Interface.
Sometimes this doesn't happen, so check and enter, if necessary the current build number (4 digits).

Secondly, the value under settings will be overwritten by any non-zero value stored in a Preset that is later loaded.
Thirdly, when creating a Preset, the value then set under Settings will be copied over, which may relate to an earlier build!
Hence, make sure that 'Do not show Welcome ...' = 0 is stored in every Preset!!
Only then will the value in a Preset not overwrite the value under Settngs! :D

However, the recommended method for creating a Preset is to begin by File > Revert All Settings.
This reverts all values to the as-installed values, except for a few settings, which one would normally like not to lose!
One such is the 'Do not show Welcome ...' value.
So change this to zero before creating the Preset -- very important. :!:
