I'd choose Xvid for it's open-source'ness.

You can't use Divx in MC since version 0.6.1.

Does this mean that if you want avi you're limited to either Divx or Xvid ?

MPEG4(format) in drop down menu is compatible with those 2, but you must change the fourcc to DX50.

It is possible to use other codecs in avi, but not usually done.

I'm soory but where did you find

fourcc and DX50 ???
And how could you make to convert some video file to DivX that could work on a DVD Player compatible ?
Thanks, Vincent.

MPEG4 is listed in the same menu with xvid -Video tab - Format, this codec (Lavc) will play on dvd players that play Divx, but the fourcc which tells the decoder what the file is, is really FMP4. Just as the fourcc for Xvid is Xvid and for Divx is Divx or DX50.

So in Overall - Video Options- Override fourcc of output stream = DX50

that way the player sees it as a Divx5 file.

No idea what version 7 looks like, but in Settings- Overall - Video Options- Override fourcc of output stream(something like that) you type DX50

I hope it is 4396 :)
