Huffyuv to suit Premiere

Post by meRobs » Thu Aug 13, 2009 2:15 pm

I convert VOB files in NTSC to AVI for editing in Adobe Premiere.
The only Codecs in MediaCoder that seem to work are MPEG4 and Huffyuv.
Both come into Premiere quickly and have render bars (need on the fly rendering to play or scrub).
Huffyuv behaves better.

However, there are problems.
The frames created by Huffyuv are slightly faulty when seen in Premiere, there is a strip 8 pixels wide at the right edge that are unrelated to the rest.
This I can overcome by setting Width = 724 in settings (stored in a Preset) and shifting the videoin Premiere by 2 pixels in the x direction.
Also, of course, I would rather it wasn't sluggish when scrubbing.

The Huffyuv.dll is not installed on my PC.
Its presence would probably be needed by Premiere for outputting to Huffyuv, but, would it make any difference for playing an AVI in Huffyuv?
From Premiere I output as M2V/PCM, never as AVI/Huffyuv1!

Any other suggestions.
Thanks

Thanks Mixer, but I was aware of the Huffyuv link.
I had also read of people having trouble with removing this DLL etc and it possibly causing some Apps to crash.
Moreover, this DLL seems to be used when creating an AVI, not in encoding the AVI to M2V/PCM via Premiere ??

Are you saying that you use the DLL with no problems?
Also, are you implying that
(1) MC would do a better job in converting to Huffyuv AVIs with the DLL present?
(2) and the DLL is useful in encoding Huffyuv AVIs?
Thanks again

Question to Stanley: does MediaCoder see or use the "Huffyuv.dll" if it is installed??
I ask because MediaCoder is 'self contained'.
Thanks

Thanks Mixer.
One last question: would Adobe Premiere require the DLL to play (view) an AVI in Huffyuv from MC or improve its play?

(I realise Premiere probably needs the DLL to export its Timeline to Huffyuv, which I don't do!)
Thanks again

Thanks Mixer, it looks like I don't need it.

Premiere accepts the huffyuv AVI, but shows a render bar (needs on the fly rendering to play). It also has an 8-pixel wide strip of faulty pixels along the R edge, which I overcome by setting the frame 4 pixels wider (724, likely reason for the render bar) and moving it 2 pixels to the right.
It plays reasonably well, depending on how stressed Premiere is, and will export correctly to DV-AVI or M2V after editing!

Other conversions in MC (AVI in MPEG4, etc) give the correct frame width, etc, though they play very sluggishly in Premiere.

Maybe, FFmpeg in MC needs a fix.
Thanks again.
