Boosting MediaCoder performance under WINE?

Have just installed MediaCoder on my MythBuntu based HTPC for converting high def content, and all looks to be working well. One issue I do have is that running MediaCoder under WINE on Linux seems to be very slow compared to my XP system with similar hardware specs. I was expecting to loose some performance because of the emulation layer of WINE, however I'm finding that conversions under Linux/WINE are less than half that of my XP system. Is there anything I can do to give MediaCoder and/or WINE a shot in the arm performance wise?
