Google Video Format *.gvi

Post by Ross » Wed Jul 12, 2006 8:56 pm

A few weeks ago I found video.google.com and a new GVI environment.

User uploads are encouraged. Google claims no censorship beyond checking for technical suitability, and excluding "adult content".

Most videos are in GVI format reguiring Google Video Player. A Cable or DSL connection lets files download faster than they play so there is no waiting like streamed content.

If we click on a 1kb .gvp stub file, the url referenced in the *.gvp plays. To save a download, the url, can be extracted and copied into a browser.

Is there a technical reference? How are GVIs transcoded?
A useful format with promiss. ~Ross

AVI to GVI - help

Post by Ross » Thu Jul 13, 2006 4:18 am

Congratulations on MediaCoder. It is most encouraging!

I have found a few simple clues for AVI to GVI transcoding.

GVI uses DivX4 codec and the file header begins same as AVI
The header type identifier is googGDAT

A few files will play both as AVI and GVI just by changinf the file suffix.

Most converted AVIs (from QT, WMV, AVI) report errors on renaming the suffix to play as GVI.

Any clues help will be appreciated.

There are good solutions here.

www.Naevius.com has an excellent GVI>AVI converter.

www.Movavi.com will release an AVI>GVI converter in a few days.

Thanks for all your good work. javascript:emoticon(':D')

Naevius GVI Converter is the program that allows you to convert Google Video Files (GVI) to AVI format.
Add GVI files, click Start button and You will get AVI files.
Useful, easy and conveniently!

How work it?

1. Run Naevius GVI Converter.
2. Select Output Folder ("D:\" for example).
3. Click "Add..." button and add GVI-file ("C:\video\test.gvi" for example).
4. Click "Start" button.

If there is any command line utility to do the job, I will be happy to integrate it.

EDIT: maybe I should study GVI format and write some code to support it cause it's so hot.

It's not a CLI and there seems no source code of it.
