All AVI files have no Video

Post by MajesticJG » Fri Jan 04, 2008 12:56 am

I tried using MediaCoder to demux/remux an MKV to an AVI file. It completes fine, but the resulting AVI has no video - only sound. It seems to do that no matter what files I use. The MKV files contain h.264/DTS or h.264/AC3, are around 4.5 gb and I'm just selecting "Copy" for the Audio and the Video.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

h264 is not compatible with the avi container. A few fansubbing groups have hacked their way into it and are able to distribute h264 in a avi but it's no clean solution and it's not officialy supported.

This means you either have to select a different container (mp4, mkv) or use xvid as your video codec which means bigger files or less good quality (I suppose your big files are 720P).
MediaCoder settings:

x264 (backend/source: mencoder, fps: 23,976, Fabio Sonatti's settings) + nero aac 64 in matroska

That explains it. That also explains why xVid/MP3 is popular in AVI and h264/AC3 is popular in MKV.
