wmv to Xvid
Hello all ,
First, i dont have much experience in videoencoding and stuff , so please forgive me stupid questions.
As i wrote in the topic i want to convert some wmv files to Xvid(avi), so i could watch them on my DVD-Player.
Could somebody please tell me the correct settings for getting the files :
a) in an acceptable quality
b) DVD compliant
c) not to big files
Thanks

You may be able to extract using one of those.
However, I don't have a WMV file. I don't know if MPlayer (MEncoder)
will show the file. Try viewing first with MPlayer. It it works, you may
be able to extract from it.
Try changing the Audio Formats if things fail. It can't hurt.
Please let me know how you get on.
As for creating a MWV....
I've looked into it and found that at present WMV is not an open
format, so MediaCoder (as far as I am aware) does not do this.
Shame really, I was hopeing to get something in 'Tips And Guide'.
Any way, let's hope that the format becomes available to one and all.
All the best.

It's true. It's true!
The only thing I was doing was to makeup my own Karaoke
Films and singing (ok enough of that), text, video overlays etc and family
films of holidays etc.
So, I decided to learn a bit more. I trawl the net, look at other programs
and read what I can find. But most importantly of all, I learn form
those who point out my mistakes.
All the best

Also, let me see:
a) acceptable quality you should try, I would say 750kbit but most people say 1000kbit and above and of course 2-pass.
b) DVD compliant, you cannot play XVID Videos on normal DVD-Players, you need a Player which can play at least Divx.
c) see question a) lower bitrate smaller Files but lower quality.
I for myself decided to use XVID 750kbit and MP3 VBR 96kbit, so that I get around 600MB per Film for a long time, now I use x264@700kbit and AAC 64kbit.
