OLD avi codec

Post by DynV » Sun Jun 24, 2012 8:08 pm

I've recently installed an OLD Windows program, likely 9x (95-98), which doesn't take the AVI I'm producing. I've tried for ~30 minutes to tweak the settings and did multiple conversions to see if I could manage it on my own but I couldn't. I'm not close ot good at codecs but I figured the closest I got was using container (with the tab of the same name) AVI. As audio isn't desired unchecked enable then went to video and for format (button of the same name) unchecked copy video then chose (from the newly enabled drop-down next to the button) raw video ; next got to encoder unchecking auto then choose frame dumper ; next was source, again unchecking auto, then selecting image decoder. The source material is:
  • Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)
  • Resolution: 288x360
  • Frame rate: 29.974
  • Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV
I really need the AVI to be closest to its successful beginnings (after a proper version was released (thus beta testing was over)). If for whichever reason, it's impossible to manage to get, please refer me to a free/OSS software.

Thank you kindly for your help

I suggest you read through the Encoding Guide, under Tips & Guides (link below).
Then, try either of the two AVI suggestions in the Table.
Change the Resize and Framerate to whatever you want or set each at 'original'.

Perhaps I didn't understand your instruction but I followed
AviSynth or MEncoder as video Source ? ......................viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8624&start=0 .........updated 16 Apr 2010
So I put everything to auto (source material still the same as OP) except Source which I tired AviSynth & AVI Reader which both made the error
Incorrect parameters for FFmpeg
From what I understand, about the conversion process, it first decode the media (audio and/or video) changing/streaming it to a raw format then encode it in a container. The process I'm assuming is similar to changing content from a zip (file compression format) to a rar ; at one point during the process it will have taken its original format (file), even if just part by part in a buffer (as it stream).

If my understanding about the conversion is correct and source mean decoder, shouldn't Source be set to auto and instead Encoder set to something which can produce an AVI playable on early Windows (9x) by default (right after installation (so only from windows disc ; without downloading additional codecs)).

Thank you

Yes, the source material is decoded (read and interpreted) first, and the decoder is the 'Source' whose choice is important.
The streams are then encoded and finally they are combined (multiplexed) into the container.
Sometimes, a separate multiplexer is not required, in which case, it is disabled.

Also, the Codecs are not downloaded when needed, they are included in MediaCoder.

Have you tried the Encoding Guide, as I suggested?

Yes I tried but failed to implement as suggested. If you would be so kind as to look at my last post, you might see that I tried the link of the only mention of AVI (in the guide) which I got an error and finally mentioned
Source be set to auto and instead Encoder set to something which can produce an AVI playable on early Windows (9x) by default
from which I'm asking to be confirmed and asking which encoder I should choose.

Thanks

The default video codecs that Windows 95/98 comes installed with is indeed limited.

from http://www.free-codecs.com/guides/Addin ... indows.htm :
Intel : Indeo R3.1 Video Codec , Indeo R3.2 Video Codec
Microsoft Video codecs : RLE Video Codec , Video 1 Video Codec
SuperMatch : Cinepak Video Codec

Cinepak encoding with mencoder (with ffmpeg doing the decoding first) should be possible, in Mediacoder too;
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1709506

Any old Microsoft proprietary video encoding tools (if still available somewhere) should certainly be
able to encode video with their own codecs.

Windows 7 should still have MS RLE and video 1 codes, so you could simply encode the video with them in Virtualdub.

From these comments in your last post I failed to realise you had followed my suggestion to use the Encoding Guide.
The Guide has two suggestions for AVI and neither use AviSynth or MEncoder. Indeed note 17 states that MEncoder fails and that you could use FFmpeg as Source.

I any case, I am sorry if I misinterpreted what you had written.
Also, both conversion suggestions in the Guide should work (give a clean output) and if neither would play in your old unspecified PGM, I am unable to offer any more ideas.
Good luck.
