Please make sure MediaCoder is able to connect to Internet.

Post by deepc » Fri Dec 23, 2011 1:42 pm

Hi,

I just downloaded MediaCoder2011-x64-R10-5215 and am using it to transcode a bunch of flv to avi (working around Windows Explorer not being able to generate thumbnails for flash video - hints on that appreciated). While the transcoding works fine, every 3 or 4 files I am getting the popup messagebox:

"Please make sure MediaCoder is able to connect to Internet."

Well, I don't really see a reason to do add a rule to the firewall. Especially since no reason is given and transcoding works just fine. Is there an option I can switch off so that it stops interrupting (not only the transcoding but also everything else I am doing)? Already tried to switch of the http server and the rss stuff but to no avail. During installation it already complained 2 or 3 times about missing internet connection but continued anyway. And since transcoding works... what else do I need.

Thanks...

PS: could not download the current 5218 build. All mirrors did not work, and on Firefox I did not even get feedback about that, there was simply no download. Only on Opera a message box hinted that the version was not available on that mirror. Maybe it is so new that it was not available anywhere? :-) To work around that I had to look at the javascript on the download page and change the download url from ...5218 to ...5215. A simple link would have made this a lot easier to "fix".

I think the request to access the internet is due to MediaCoder wanting to ask whether you could donate. If you do, you will be given an ID to avoid such a Popup. If you don't wish to, hit Cancel and it will continue to convert for another 4 or 5 or so files, etc.

Thanks - in that case it would basically be a nag screen (which may be or may not be justified - not judging). However, I suggest to improve the wording in that direction. In my opinion, the message should at least state why Mediacoder needs internet access at that time.

using version 0.8.30.5622
without the internet connection, after file reaches 99% this message appears. hitting OK makes it reappear. FFS this program gets as annoying as some virus/malware every year

Since I donated a long time ago, I don't know what the current pop up is like... but as meRobs said:

I'm assuming there is a Cancel button alongside the OK button?
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

Hey there, I have signed up just because of this topic. It's really ... uncool.
HuggiL wrote: I'm assuming there is a Cancel button alongside the OK button?
No, there isn't one. There is just an "OK" button, nothing more. And if you click on it, it reappears instantly. If you close it 1000 times, it will reappear 1000 times. And even more hilarious: When there is an internet connection, it still says the same, and acts like as if there is not a connection.

Normally this message seems to appear if you try to encode more than two files in a queue. Currently I had transcoded a video with the "placebo" profile in x264, and it took 30 minutes for a 3 minutes video. Guess what happened... this popup came at 99%. Since I'm unable to continue because it would still say I should connect to the internet when there is clearly one (even whitelist in firewall), I have now a slightly broken video, and wasted time + energy. Because it looks like that it needs a restart to see the internet connection. Uncool!

On much faster profiles like "medium" or "slow" this doesn't happen, so I'm assuming that this is clearly intended. I don't have anything against a (kind) question or that I should visit an URL of you with ads to support you, but this current behavior is very near to an extortion and I don't have much respect for that. I'm a private user and I don't really need to rely on this program, there are alternatives. It would be nice, if you (the author of the program), could rethink a little about your pressure methods. But since this seems to be standard for years, I will be switching to my alternatives if it will ever interrupt and cancel my transcodings at 99% again.

Thank you!

I think you might have to run the program with admin privileges. I don't think I've ever gotten the message about connecting to the internet but considering that the program needs admin privileges to connect to the validation server when putting in a MediaCoder ID, it might be the same issue.

I can confirm that the "Please make sure MediaCoder is able to connect to Internet." nag box does not have a cancel button, and does not go away, and does not permit continuing encoding. So after just 3 encodes, the program is useless! Way to drive people away  Mediacoder x64 0.8.30.5622

Time to learn ffmpeg command line options. But for my kids' cartoons, i'll just use Freemake then: Free, CUDA, good quality, and did i say free as in NO NAGS, much less ones that kill your encoding job.

Are you people sure there isn't something blocking MediaCoder? Like a firewall or anti-malware program? Try disabling any security software you have when attempting to connect.

Even with disabled Firewalls and other kind of shields, this popup still reopens itself everytime I try to close it. It doesnt matter if I click OK or the close button, also I clicked ~500 times already. File needed 1 hour of 100% CPU and doesnt get finished because of this. So far, it looks like this program is only acting like it would convert video files, but as soon someone wants to see the results, this permanent popup appears.
