Using GPU (CUDA) for Converting

Post by kpat99 » Tue Nov 01, 2011 12:46 pm

I really like the program so far. But i don't understand why it is only utilizing my CPU and not my GPU's.

Its running at a speed of about 6.8X. Showing CPU at 97%, and doesn't mention GPU at all. When i monitor the temps the CPU goes way up while the GPU doesn't move at all.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

It will be helpful if you indicate what settings you are using.
For example, on the Video tab: did you set Encoder = CUDA encoder and check the GPU box?
What else?

Thanks

I just checked that off and now i'm getting around 18X speed. Seems to be about 40% cpu, rest i presume is GPU.

It did say CUDA will only work in H.264. Does that affect much? Are there threads explaining this

I don't use CUDA -- it is not available on my system. So, I can't comment from personal experience.
H.264 is an excellent, modern video format, in terms of quality.

The only problem may be that H.264 is suitable for use only in some Containers.
Maybe read the H.264/x264 Guide -- see Tips & Guides (link below) -- and maybe others.

Use GPU-Z for monitor % GPU

With use CUDA-ENCODER:
DECODER video, as CPU [dec software]
ENCODER video, as GPU with CUDA [enc hardware] a MPEG-4 AVC [aka h.264]
