Build 5135 Some AC-3 works, some not work

Post by ysbinns » Tue Apr 19, 2011 4:53 pm

I ran across several MKV files with AC-3 6ch low volume audio that would not transcode into LC-AAC 2ch using Nero Encoder. Here is the MediaInfo on the files that do and do not work:

Work:

Audio
ID : 2
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Mode extension : CM (complete main)
Codec ID : A_AC3
Duration : 2h 1mn
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 384 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth : 16 bits
Compression mode : Lossy
Stream size : 335 MiB (21%)

Not Work:

Audio
ID : 2
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Mode extension : CM (complete main)
Codec ID : A_AC3
Duration : 2h 12mn
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 640 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz

I'm using the new Audio Encoder 2011 build 5135. Is this the forum that I should use for bug reports?

Additional info. I have experimented with many AC-3 6ch MKV files. All files with 640kbps bitrates fail. All other files, 448kbps bitrates or less, work.

I've already tried the full version 5130, 5135 and 5136. None of them work !!!! The last version that worked for how I use it was 4740. I've been doing a lot of experimentation to try to understand why things don't work with the full version. I've come to the conclusion that something is wrong with the Copy Video function. If you choose that then all the audio functions like Copy Audio, transcode the audio, audio gain, they don't work. If I do not enable the video then many things with audio start working. I've posted several bug reports but got no response.

With the new AudioCoder 5135 using the files with AC-3 6ch that don't work, I discovered that if I remove the video content using Mkvmerge GUI and use the new audio only file then these files work fine. I have found over 2 dozen of my files that did not work in AudioCoder but worked fine after I removed the video.

To me this sounds like a definte problem with the video component interferring with the supposed functions of MediaCoder and AudioCoder. And this problem has persisted for a long time. So for my needs I have developed a method where I create separate video and audio files with Mkvmerge Gui, transcode each file as needed using MediaCoder 4740 and AudioCoder 5135, and then put them back together with MediaCoder 4740 (this putting them back together also doesn't work with MediaCoder 5135) to make a new mp4 file. This method has worked well for all my transcoding needs.

Maybe some day those development engineers will listen to users and get things fixed. But I'm not going to hold my breath !!!

In such case, you can try altering audio source.
When things work together, things work.
