Sometimes you can APPEND 2 avis with the same codecs with Virtual Dub and stream copy. If the audio is VBR, this does not always work, in which case try copying video and redoing audio to CBR mp3 or ac3 with MC. The Join selection may work or try VDub again.

Try getting a bitrate calculator: A video of 1hour 44 minutes with audio of 448kbps - the audio alone is 333mb ! So dropping the audio bit rate is definitely enough to fit the video on a cd. Copy Video mpeg2 to an avi container will probably not work, as you discovered. Some players read the aspect ratio in the header, some just play back from the actual dimensions = 720x480 or 720x576

Resizing with square pixels is the only way to be sure of all players.
