I think it's really overrated to call that kind of behavior spyware though. Cause it only checks for updates etc and doesn't submit any data of what is on your pc, what you are using it for and so on. And you can turn all of those things off in the settings dialogue... Exactly where do you turn off...

I realize that Mediacoder is "free" and that usually beggars can't be choosers. I would be willing to 'contribute to' or 'register' a version of Mediacoder minus all the automated web browsing and update checking browser launching baloney.
