I see, well, I did as mixer suggested & I dl'ed and intalled an older version x86 *5290*, dropping 5588, my op/sys is both Win7 & XP SP3, Mediacoder runs in both of them, XP has no network drivers & no internet access at all & is where do the majority of my video/audio editing, after installing 5290...

aaahhhh,,,,,I see, I'm using version 8.28 build 5588 (build date Jan.14),
I take it that this being a recent version it will not support *effects* as the last 32bit version to do so in the list is 5290?
